The royal family is just like most of its brethren—members rush to finish projects and engagements in July, ahead of a few leisurely weeks of summer vacation. This year is no different.

Some members racked up impressive numbers in July, none posting a larger gain than Kate, Duchess of Cambridge. For the first half of 2017, she’d completed just 47 engagements then knocked off 33 in July, due largely to a five-day visit to Poland and Germany with Prince William and their children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte as well as six events in Belgium marking the 100th anniversary of Passchendaele at the end of the month. In a month or so, his schedule should be noticeably busier. He’s given up his air ambulance job and is moving with his wife and childrento London to become a full-time working member of the royal family.

July was also the first month since February in which Kate, 35, surpassed Prince Philip’s workload. The 96-year-old undertook 21 engagements in the month. Like those of his wife, Queen Elizabeth II, the events were clustered in the first half of the month, just before their annual two-month-long summer break. This time, however, Philip won’t be returning to work in September. Instead, he’ll begin his well-earned retirement from full-time royal service.

While Her Majesty had a busy month, nearly three-quarters of her work was done behind the gilded gates of royal palaces and castles. She undertook only 11 events in the public, including several during her annual visit to Edinburgh, when the Queen took a boatride and unveiled a new canal named after herself.

While the work leaders of the royal family kept up a hard pace—Princess Anne undertook 63 engagements, Prince Charles did 54 while Prince Andrew did 37—those in the middle of the pack did noticeably less in July. The exception was Prince William, who did 33 engagements, more than double his highest monthly workload of 2017. Again, that busy trip to Germany and Poland explains the difference.
